When announcing your free directory, be sure to keep the submissions in check. Most of the sites you will receive will be spam or MFA (made for adsense). It's a great way to populate your directory quickly so it looks active, but accepting and reviewing each site may take a lot of time.

Use custom descriptions

Always use custom descriptions when submitting to directories. For a long time I re-used descriptions that I wrote and realized over time that eventually those listings became worthless.

It's not enough to rotate between 3-4 descriptions...you can re-use the same general idea, but always write it in your own words when you're filling out the submission form.

Use a short title description, about 2-3 words (2 is better, but 3 if you need it to demonstrate the title of the site). Do NOT use more than 4 words in a title. It will simply be seen as spam.

Always spell check your submission. Don't write it in English if English is not your first language.

Free Reciprocal Link to use for Directory Submissions

One of the problems I have with reciprocal link directories are the fact that your site may not necessarily be a good match to link directly to a link directory that requires a backlink for submission.

Here's a directory tracking site that tracks performance in search engines over time for quite a few link directories.

You can use the link to the listing for submissions that require reciprocal links during submission.

Here's an example:
