One of the problems I have with reciprocal link directories are the fact that your site may not necessarily be a good match to link directly to a link directory that requires a backlink for submission.

Here's a directory tracking site that tracks performance in search engines over time for quite a few link directories.

You can use the link to the listing for submissions that require reciprocal links during submission.

Here's an example:

Click on a listing from the filtered results, you can use this URL on DoD.i as the reciprocal link when submitting to a directory that they track (eg. http://directoryofdirectories.info/directories/2215)
